BrainWaves Pilot Cohort Study Launches!

The Pilot Cohort Study is the first step in meeting our long term goals of improving and developing outcomes for adolescent mental health through empowering, educating and supporting young people as they navigate their wellbeing journeys.

Throughout the month of April, BrainWaves will be running the Pilot Cohort Study with over 13,000 students from 22 different Research Schools and Colleges across the country. This exciting study consists of an annual online mental health survey, with the potential to track the same participants and their responses over a long period of time – in this instance, 10 years.

Starting on 15th April, our first cohort of students from across the country will be participating in BrainWaves’ inaugural mental health and wellbeing questionnaire. The topics and questions have been developed by a team of researchers from Oxford University with feedback from BrainWaves’ Young People’s Advisory Group – students’ voices are always at the heart of what we do.

The data collected will be analysed by Oxford University, where the aim is to improve the quality of scientific knowledge surrounding this research area. In the longer term, we will use the data to create an integrated platform, accessible to researchers, psychologists and scientific communities worldwide, which will help feed research, education and conversations around adolescent mental health and wellbeing. Additionally, we hope to collect relevant, up-to-date data on trends and patterns in the field of adolescent mental health and wellbeing to feed into future scientific trials.

We hope that the study will also help inform the wider work of BrainWaves, particularly in educational settings. Participating schools and colleges will be provided with a report which will summarise their cohort’s wellbeing trends, and the study – along with others in the BrainWaves project – will enable us to provide evidence-based resources, interventions and training for use in schools and colleges.

The Pilot Cohort Study is the first step in meeting our long term goals of improving and developing outcomes for adolescent mental health through empowering, educating and supporting young people as they navigate their wellbeing journeys. We hope that it will deepen our understanding of adolescent mental health experiences and help us develop solutions that have students’ voices at their core.

Being part of BrainWaves is something that helps others. The time and data given by our first ever cohort will allow future generations to live happier and more fulfilling lives, and we can’t wait to share our findings later this year!

If you’d like to be part of the change and participate in the study from November, please email support@brainwaveshub.org to find out more.
