Discrimination

Participants in the BrainWaves Cohort study were asked “Have you ever experienced perceived discrimination due to an aspect of you or your life?” and then asked to select which type(s) of discrimination they have experinced.

The graphs show the distribution of responses to these questions about discrimination, and split by sex, on the first occasion that they completed the BrainWaves Cohort Study questionnaire.

The combined statistics show the areas where discrimination hs been experienced are appearance, race, sexual orientation and misogyny, with male respondents placing race as the highest type and females respondents experienceing more discrimination about their appearance, their race, misogyny and then their sexual orientation.

The BrainWaves Cohort Study has collected responses from over 24,000 people aged 16-18 in schools across the UK, over three time points in 2024 and 2025.
